‘It’s in the Cloud so it must be backed up’ is a commonly held myth. The Microsoft Office 365 platform, along with most other well-known Cloud platforms, does not hold long-term backups of your data, email or otherwise.

Microsoft guarantee that the Office 365 platform will be available 99.9% of the time, and they use a global network of datacentres to ensure this. However this does not include taking backups of your data. There is a relatively short retention period, and that’s all.

So imagine, that important spreadsheet you’ve been updating for years suddenly gets corrupted & the only answer is to roll back to an older pre-corruption copy. How shocked would you be to discover there is no older copy available? This could be a reality for anyone who assumes Microsoft or other Cloud providers are diligently backing up their data.
