Watch out for ‘Locky’ Ransomware spreading via social media

28th November 2016

padlocks-597815_640Reports are coming in of dangerous Ransomware beginning to spread through social media networks.

Users have reported receiving suspicious JPEG files in personal messages through social media networks like Facebook & LinkedIn which contain Ransomware.

Sent via personal messages, these image files trigger an automatic download when clicked on. This downloaded file contains Ransomware.

This particular strain of Ransomware known as ‘Locky’ is activated as soon as the unsuspecting victim clicks on the downloaded image. As soon as this happens they find that all of their files on their computer have become encrypted and are no longer accessible.

The only way for the user to then unlock their files is to pay a ransom to the hackers responsible, which is always a risky move as there is absolutely no guarantee that they will deliver on their promise of unlocking your files after you have parted with your money.

With many businesses using social media platforms to network with customers and clients and to promote their businesses via Facebook, it is important that employees are made aware of the risks posted. They should also make sure that company computers are up to date with anti-virus and anti-malware programmes.

Finally, if you click an image on social media and it automatically downloads you should not open it under any circumstances and you should be wary of any unexpected files on your desktop which include file extensions like SVG, JS or HTA.
